Creator of Biohub’s ‘cytoself’ protein-localization method named 2022 STAT Wunderkind

Kobayashi cited as among ‘the brightest young minds’ in research

Hirofumi “Hiro” Kobayashi, who recently completed a two-and-a-half-year stint as a Research Fellow in the Biohub’s Organismal Architecture Group led by Loïc Royer, has been named a 2022 “Wunderkind” by STAT, a national media outlet covering health, medicine, and the life sciences.

The STAT Wunderkind awards celebrate early-career researchers, honoring “the brightest young minds in health and science,” according to the award website.

Kobayashi, who left the Biohub in September for a new position on the machine-learning team at Los Angeles–based Pictor Labs, was cited by STAT for many accomplishments, including the development of cytoself, a self-supervised deep-learning method that can capture detailed information on subcellular protein localization from microscopy images.

Described in a July paper in Nature Methods, cytoself has played an important role in the OpenCell project headed by Manuel Leonetti, Group Leader in Quantitative Cell Science.

The STAT Wunderkinds will be publicly announced at STAT’s annual Summit, to be held November 14 and 15 in Boston, Mass.
